Yes, I do have also an iPhone and yes, I want to give a chance to other good products also, not just for Nokia Maemo devices:) If you accidentally upgraded iPhone’s firmware to 3.1.2 which also updated the baseband, you were out of luck. The firmware was not possible to unlock or to downgrade to the previous version. Not before today.

A hacker called geohot released a new unlock for iPhone called blacksn0w today. It was first available only with blackra1n, but now it’s also available via Cydia if your iPhone’s been jailbreaked already. I guess you can find these instruction like billion times from the internet but here’s one quick guide more.

Of course I need to say here, that I don’t encourage anyone to break a contract made with a teleoperator by unlocking the iPhone. However  you can gain many benefits just jailbreaking the phone, like you can install other goodies via Cydia (terminal, ssh, etc). Here are the instructions for jailbreaking and for unlocking the phone.

How to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone?

Using Blackra1n:

  • Go to the: http://blackra1n.com/ and download either windows or mac version of it and unzip the package
  • Connect your iPhone to your computer
  • Run blackra1n on your computer and wait the jailbreak to be ready
  • When iPhone’s ready start blackra1n from the home and install blacksn0w from the main menu
  • Wait couple of seconds and that’s it. Try to change the SIM and it should find your operator’s carrier

Using Cydia

  • Check any tutorial for jailbreaking the iPhone e.g. with Pwngetool. After this you will have Cydia installed on your iPhone
  • Add http://blackra1n.com/ as a repo
  • install blackra1n and that’s it.

I sure hope that this article will help someone. That’s all folks.
